How would it feel
to see the Earth
from the Moon...
This special video experience directed by Hiromitsu Kohsaka explores humanity’s collective history of lunar exploration, as well as future plans for the Moon and Mars including an introduction to some of JAXA’s lunar exploration projects. The four stories together provide a spectacular representation of the Moon’s surface making full use of cutting-edge computer-graphics.
- Hiromitsu Kohsaka | Profile
- I started out as an illustrator and animator, making videos from hand-drawn
illustrations. Then, when computer graphics arrived, I developed my own 3D
software program and started creating CGI videos.
The 2009 CGI short film Hayabusa—Back to the Earth, depicting the exploits of the asteroid explorer Hayabusa, was a very popular attraction at the planetarium and an inspiration to many. Subsequent works appeared in Japan and around the world, and were recognized with a string of awards.

Standing on the Moon. And beyond...
Story 1 looks back on the history of space exploration and envisions a possible future on the Moon, beyond lunar exploration projects in progress. Our curiosity about the “unknown” could lead us closer to answering humanity's big questions such as “Where did we come from?” or “Where are we headed to?”.

SLIM Pinpoint landing
Whereas previous lunar landings have been accurate to no more than several kilometers, the SLIM compact lunar exploration module is designed to make pinpoint landings with accuracy of less than 100 meters. The movie uses impressive computer-graphics to illustrate just how SLIM will slow down from its 6,000km per hour orbit around the Moon and then execute a pinpoint landing.

LUPEX a journey to search for water on the Moon
If water exists on the Moon, perhaps it could be used to make fuel for spacecraft and support human activity, such as further exploration and even expeditions to Mars. How much water is there on the Moon, and in what form? The Lunar Polar Exploration Mission (LUPEX) will help us uncover these and other mysteries.

PRESSURIZED ROVER
taking astronauts wherever they need to go
If we could travel anywhere on the lunar surface, what might we discover? The Pressurized Rover is designed to take astronauts and science equipment wherever they need to go, safely traversing tough terrain while protecting them from the harsh lunar environment. This depiction of human exploration will pique your curiosity and raise your expectations for the future.

SLIM is a compact exploration landing spacecraft designed for pinpoint landing
on the lunar
surface and demonstration of the feasibility of lightweight lunar probe and
landing module
designs. Following landing, it also performed a range of scientific experiments
looking into
the origins of the Moon.
Establishment of the SLIM mission will serve as a template for
pinpoint landings on other planets with much stronger gravity. Additionally, the
world’s
smallest and lightest transformable lunar rover LEV-2 (nicknamed “SORA-Q”),
which was
mounted on SLIM, moved fully autonomously and successfully captured images of
SLIM on the
lunar surface.
The Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) Mission is a joint project with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to obtain the data on the quantity and forms of the water resources present on the Moon, in order to determine the feasibility of utilizing such resources for sustainable space exploration activities in the future. The LUPEX rover, designed and built by JAXA, will collect regolith samples from multiple locations and depths on the Moon and analyze them.
The Pressurized Rover is a lunar rover that can be boarded without a space suit. It is the "world's first" exploration vehicle to combine the functions of habitation and transportation, allowing astronauts to live in the rover and explore the surface of a gravity body such as the Moon.
